Town staff briefed the mayor and council on a county- and Chesapeake Bay Trust–funded bioretention project designed to improve water quality and reduce runoff from Beale Circle West.
Peaks described the facility as a "micro bioretention" area positioned to intercept stormwater from adjacent roadways and impervious surfaces; the scope includes minor regrading, planting a naturalized palette of native shrubs, grasses and perennials, and construction of an engineered stormwater treatment feature. Staff said on-call engineer Pannoni completed drainage analysis and design details and is reviewing construction proposals from the town’s on-call contractors.
The project’s CIP budget and grant amount is $89,000 with no town match; staff said approximately $70,000 remains after covering engineering costs and is expected to cover installation. Prince George’s County Department of the Environment will supply and install street trees contingent on mayor-and-council approval in fall 2026. Staff plan to ask the council at the next legislative meeting to authorize a task-order contract with the selected contractor, with construction expected in spring.
Council members asked about lane closures and timing; Director Lewis said material staging may close a lane temporarily during regrading but the roadway will remain open for traffic. Staff also committed to posting designs and images on the town website before construction.
