Town of Townsend hears ambulance and fire department updates; ambulance building plans set for review

Town of Townsend ambulance and fire officials reported service activity and near-term projects at the Jan. 13 board meeting.
Steve Harkema reported there were "15 calls in December, a total of 215 calls for 2025, down from 249 in 2024," and said building plans for a new ambulance facility will be sent to an architect and then to the state for approval, with construction hoped to begin in May or June 2026. Harkema also said the new medical director is Dr. Michael Clark of Wausau.
Fire Chief Dawn Herlache reported the Townsend Fire Department responded to 50 calls in 2025, "more than recent years," and described coordinated burn and training exercises with the Nicolet Fire District and collaboration with Lakewood Fire Department. She said volunteers received training on new extrication equipment.
Board members did not take formal action on either department report; both were presented as informational items and recorded in the minutes. The ambulance building project will require further architectural and state review before any construction contract or funding decision.
