The Town of Townsend board at its Feb. 10 meeting heard routine departmental reports, approved several licenses and took community announcements.
Ambulance and fire updates: Steve Harkema reported 24 ambulance calls since the prior meeting with eight no-transports; he said building plans for the ambulance facility are being finalized and a new chassis will be ready in May. The minutes note that two full-time EMS workers are cutting back hours and that LTA is recruiting two paramedics and an advanced EMT. Dacon Franzen said the fire department had three calls since the last meeting and that a training burn at a Bass Lake home is tentatively scheduled for April 4; the department continues collaborative work with Lakewood Fire.
Licenses and events: The board approved operators licenses for Kelly Grutzik, Steven Niggs, Rick VanAsten and Robert VandeHei after individual motions and voice action. Chairperson Monica Zeller emphasized that approvals are made on an individual basis and “no approval should be considered as establishing a precedent for future applications.” The board also approved a Temporary Beverage License for the Red Arrow Snowmobile-ATV Club’s party on Feb. 21.
Waste and facilities: Supervisor Chuck DeMoulin reported that Home Depot is the preferred site for lithium battery disposal because the town’s recycle center will not accept lithium batteries. The McCaslin Lions donated $7,500 to the town earmarked for the pickleball court, according to correspondence noted in the minutes.
Public comment and meeting close: During public comment Steve Harkema said he has been the subject of personal attacks and threats since the prior meeting. Announcements included a WTA district meeting (Feb. 14), a Red Cross blood mobile (Feb. 16), a town work session (Feb. 16), Red Arrow SnowFest (Feb. 20) and a Forest Service meeting (March 3). Chairperson Zeller moved to adjourn at 6:45 p.m.; the motion was seconded by Supervisor Evans and adopted.
