Ambulance and Fire Department Provide Updates; Silver Cliff Fire Dept. Remains Out of Service

Town emergency services provided operational updates at the March 10 Townsend board meeting.
Steve Harkema reported 19 ambulance calls in February and said building plans for ambulance facilities are under review, with John Zeller donating time to assist construction. Harkema told the board the new ambulance is expected by May and that Lakewood’s board has asked the ambulance committee for clearer data; Chairperson Monica Zeller requested an inter-board meeting in April involving Townsend, Lakewood and the ambulance board.
Fire Chief Dawn Herlache reported four calls since the last meeting, confirmed a training burn at the Bass Lake house scheduled for March 21, and said burning permits are available at Pintsch’s Tru Valu and on the DNR website. The minutes note that reflective chevrons were installed on the rear of two fire trucks.
Chief Herlache also reported that the Silver Cliff Fire Department remains out of service because the town has been unable to obtain insurance following a tornado two years ago; under mutual aid agreements, Athelstane and Lakewood are assisting with emergency calls in the area.
The board recorded these operational updates but took no formal policy action beyond scheduling the requested coordination meeting among ambulance stakeholders.
