Hillsborough County presented the 2026 Theodore Roosevelt Hillsborough Forever Conservation Award to staff from Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park for their work at the Manatee Critical Care Center. Katie, with Hillsborough County Communications and Digital Media, said the award recognizes more than 30 years of ‘‘critical and rehabilitative care’’ for injured and stranded manatees.
Katie told viewers the manatee care team has rescued more than 635 manatees and returned 356 to the wild, and that the center’s public engagement and education efforts help residents and visitors understand how to protect manatees and preserve Florida’s waterways.
The award announcement was part of a brief county recap of the Board of County Commissioners meeting on April 15. No board action related to the award was recorded in the recap; the segment was presented as a ceremonial recognition and public information item.
