The presenter said kindergarten cohorts showed strong proficiency gains and highlighted that some schools (Sacramento, Russell, Prescott) made measurable growth, while Shaver’s gains were more modest. "You can see a pretty typical pattern is really low rates of proficiency when kids come back to school in the fall — this is called the summer slide," the presenter said.
Administrators said next year the district will use a tutoring grant to provide dedicated elementary tutoring funds to support students who are significantly behind grade level. The district will also use the diagnostic tool to target interventions by grade level and domain (for example, phonics and comprehension). Trustees discussed mobility differences between schools and how those affect cohort trends and resource targeting.
No formal decisions were made; the board indicated support for continuing to track the data and using grant dollars for targeted tutoring next year.
