Mason County commissioners approve packet of warrants, contract amendments and support letters

Mason County commissioners on July 7 approved a set of routine financial and contracting items, including warrants, contract amendments and letters of support.
The board approved warrants numbered 8121955 through 8122254 totaling $2,008,397.26; direct-deposit warrants numbered 127119 through 127520 totaling $997,100.17; and salary-clearing warrants 7009775 through 7009804 totaling $638,168.91. Commissioner (speaker 4) read the warrants and amounts aloud as part of the action agenda.
The board authorized the county engineer to sign an amendment to the on-call hydraulic consultant contract that raises the maximum expenditure to $1,000,000 through Dec. 31, 2027, and approved increasing the annual maximum payout for the county’s on-call engineering-services agreement with Parametrics from $200,000 to $500,000 through Dec. 31, 2027. Commissioners also approved a pharmacy services agreement for the jail with Costless Senior Services Incorporated from Sept. 1, 2026, through Aug. 31, 2028.
Separately, commissioners approved a letter of support for the Mason County Recreation Event Center USDA grant application and voted to authorize a Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office applicant resolution for a youth athletic facilities grant. The board also appointed Jeff Bickford to the Solid Waste Advisory Committee for a three-year term and approved requests for defense and indemnification coverage for specified county employees under what was read as “Mason County ordinance 0 6 dash 8 18.”
Item 8.7 — a requested letter of support for the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group’s proposed trail and interpretive-signage project at the Thaler/Delaware Wetlands — was removed from the consent packet for separate discussion after questions from the public about funding and ownership. Public commenter Ken Van Boster asked how much money the salmon group was seeking and whether federal ownership (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) meant they should be the primary funder. Commissioner (speaker 4) said the county’s role was to express support, not to carry out the work, and moved approval. The motion passed by voice vote; the chair announced the motion carries.
The board voted to close the business portion of the agenda and proceed to public hearings.
