Pleasantville board administers oaths, elects officers and fills facilities role

The Pleasantville Union Free School District Board of Education opened its annual organizational meeting Tuesday, swearing in reelected trustees and moving through a series of officer elections and staffing actions.
John Vamosi was nominated and elected board president by voice vote after a brief discussion of his leadership experience; he then read the oath of office as president. Erin Ballard was elected vice president and also read the oath of office following the vote. The board recorded the formal roll call and noted that Lucas Cascardo and John Vamosi had been reelected by voters on May 19, 2026, to three-year trustee terms commencing July 1.
Why it matters: Organizational meetings set the board’s leadership and operating framework for the year. The officers approved at Tuesday’s session will preside over a year that the board described as busy, with a superintendent search, strategic plan work and a capital project on the calendar.
The board also moved to appoint district officers for 2026–27 and approved those motions by voice vote. The authorized officers listed in the motion included district clerk Robin Dunn, district treasurer Chao Anurana, deputy district clerk Donna Vittucci and deputy district treasurer Donna Vittucci; the board administered oaths for those present and noted that absent appointees would take oaths at the district clerk’s office and that records of oaths will be retained by the clerk.
In new business, the board resolved to create a full-time managerial and confidential position titled assistant director of facilities, effective July 8, 2026, a move prompted by the upcoming retirement of a long-serving facilities leader. On the recommendation of the interim superintendent, the board then appointed John Rena to that assistant director role and authorized the board president to execute a memorandum of agreement with him.
The meeting’s personnel items also included the superintendent’s note that Jonathan DeSanto will begin July 20 as assistant business manager, an appointment included on the consent agenda.
The organizational motions — officer elections, district officer appointments, the new position and the appointment of John Rena — were carried by voice votes with no recorded roll-call tallies in the transcript.
Next steps: The board adjourned the organizational portion of the session and continued into its regular meeting agenda; the newly elected officers will assume their leadership roles for the 2026–27 school year.
