Commissioners voted to form a scholarship-award committee that will develop eligibility criteria, publish an application, review submissions and recommend recipients to the board.
Brandon (presenting as a commissioner) asked the board to create a committee to administer two proposed scholarships intended to support students interested in government, civic engagement or public service. He suggested starting with two $1,000 awards and noted the committee should define who qualifies as a Walkersville student — options discussed included town residency, ZIP code or school enrollment.
Commissioner Gilbert and others raised concerns about creating additional committees for a small award program and suggested alternatives such as using the existing Alumni Association or limiting eligibility to students enrolled at the Walkersville high school to simplify administration. Brandon said the committee could recommend eligibility and the town would approve final criteria if required.
The board approved a motion to form a small committee (a town official, a staff member and a public-school representative to start, with a citizen added to the review panel later). The motion was moved by Commissioner Reagan and seconded by Commissioner Gilbert; it passed by voice vote 4–0.
