The Melbourne City Council voted unanimously on Nov. 10 to buy 2.86 acres of land adjacent to the city's sanitary lagoon for $68,500, an offer Mayor Cynthia Mansager said was 10% above a recent appraisal of $61,050.
Mayor Mansager said she had offered the higher amount during a meeting with the landowner, engineers and committee members; the landowner accepted the $68,500 offer pending council approval. "The Mayor had offered 10% above the appraisal or $68,500, pending Council approval," the meeting record states. Gaege Bracy moved to approve the purchase; Gary Fricke seconded and the motion passed with all members voting in favor.
The landowner requested a Dec. 1 payment date. Council members noted the survey must be recorded so the parcel can be placed in the property's abstract; the mayor is coordinating with engineers and the abstract company to meet the requested payment schedule. Members also raised questions about fences on the south side of the lagoon; Council member Gary Fricke said he believes both fences belong to the city and that ownership will be clarified.
Next steps: staff will complete the survey recording and coordinate closing logistics to meet the requested payment date, subject to the usual title and surveying requirements.
