The University Park Mayor and Common Council voted May 18 to authorize the mayor and town attorney to send a letter to the Prince George’s County Planning Board in support of PPS‑2024‑016, the Mark at College Park redevelopment, contingent on and in conjunction with a letter from the City of College Park. The motion, introduced by Councilmember David McGaughey and seconded by Councilmember William Sweet, passed unanimously.
McGaughey, who reported to the council as chair of the Development Overview Committee, summarized the developers’ proposal to replace two existing six‑story buildings with two 8–10‑story buildings that would roughly double the number of residential units. He told the council the project seeks rezoning to transit‑oriented zoning and “will apply the 100‑year storm standard plus 25%,” reflecting stormwater mitigation agreed with county reviewers.
Council members expressed general support for the project but asked whether the Town’s Sustainability Committee should have an opportunity to review climate and stormwater elements in light of the Town’s Climate Action Plan. McGaughey said he would share the developers’ report with CM Ralph Dubayah and noted the committee had already discussed stormwater. Town Attorney Suellen Ferguson will draft the support letter if authorized.
The council’s action was procedural: it authorized staff to transmit a letter of support to the county planning board rather than altering local zoning or approving the project. The Planning Board hearing for the project was scheduled for May 20, 2026.
