Carman-Ainsworth subcommittee votes to expel Student A, bars extracurricular participation

Acting President Gary Cousins called the Carman-Ainsworth Board of Education Student Discipline Subcommittee meeting to order at 5:31 p.m. June 23 in the administration building conference room. Superintendent Ryan explained the session was a due-process opportunity under the district's Student Code of Conduct and noted students must be referred by letter per the June 23 memorandum.

The family of Student A asked that the hearing be held in closed session. Member James Johnson moved, and Mary Margaret Gleason-Gidcumb seconded, that the subcommittee convene in Closed Session to consider the recommendation concerning Student A; the motion passed on a roll-call vote with Cousins, Gleason-Gidcumb and Johnson voting aye.

After the Closed Session, the subcommittee reconvened in Open Session at 5:46 p.m. Member Mary Margaret Gleason-Gidcumb moved, supported by James Johnson, "to expel Student A, as referenced in the Board's Student Discipline Subcommittee confidential memorandum dated June 23, 2026, from Carman-Ainsworth Community Schools for violations of the Student Code of Conduct, and that Student A shall be prohibited from participating in or attending any school district extracurricular activity, as recommended by Superintendent Ryan." The motion carried unanimously on a roll-call vote: Cousins, Gleason-Gidcumb and Johnson voted yes.
