Shiocton reports lift-station electrical fire, equipment updates and winter maintenance shortages
Summary
Clerk Laurie Sweeney reported an electrical fire at the Mill Street lift station on Jan. 11 that damaged the control panel; one pump is operating while the other awaits parts. Village Clerk Laurie Sweeney, reporting for Public Works Supervisor Dan Nabbefeld at the Jan. 12 meeting, told trustees that a Jan. 11 electrical fire at the Mill Street lift station damaged the control panel. One pump was operating at the time of the meeting; the second pump was waiting on replacement parts and local contractors Sabel and Kuettel were working on repairs. Clerk Sweeney said she would determine whether filing an insurance claim was worthwhile.
Sweeney reported additional DPW updates: the new motor and variable-frequency drive (VFD) are functioning properly; a frozen pipe in a vacant mobile home revealed a rotted valve line that will be repaired this week; the new tractor has arrived and the broom attachment is still pending; and the Kubota trade-in failed during the trade-in process and required repair, with the Village’s out-of-pocket portion under $500.
The clerk also reported a county-wide salt shortage for road maintenance. The county plans to mix salt with gravel “chips” at a ratio of about one bucket of salt to three buckets of chips to stretch supplies.
Police Chief Sara Knapp provided the department’s December activity summary and said federal agents notify local law enforcement when operating in a jurisdiction. Chief Knapp also said the shooting range is operating well; a newsletter recap of 2025 and a look ahead to 2026 will be distributed to pass holders and sent to taxpayers.
Clerk Sweeney’s report alerted trustees to immediate repair needs at the lift station and short-term winter maintenance adjustments, and the Board did not take separate formal actions on these operational items at the meeting.
