Board approves Title VI college-visit trip for Nov. 2–5; grant and tribal funds to cover costs

The Shawano School District Board approved a Title VI overnight college-visit trip for students Nov. 2–5, 2025, on a unanimous vote Oct. 27.
Joel Doxtator, the district’s Indian Education Coordinator, presented the itinerary and logistics, including visits to Marquette University, MATC, the Milwaukee Art Museum and other campus tours. Doxtator will serve as lead chaperone and the trip will include five additional parent chaperones who have undergone background checks. The planned chaperone-to-student ratio is 1:7.
Funding for the trip includes a $4,000 Higher Pathways grant; the Menominee Tribe’s education department is covering additional costs and students will raise supplemental funds through a popcorn sale. The packet includes a detailed itinerary and a list of attending students and chaperones.
Board Member Christine McKinnies moved to approve the overnight travel request; Bobbi Lemerond seconded. The motion carried 5-0.
Why it matters: the trip is presented as part of Title VI programming to increase college and career readiness for students; packet materials state the district’s role is to approve the trip and that the Title VI program and tribal partners will provide primary funding.
