Shawano board approves Menominee language course in SCHS catalog; instructor grant-funded

The Shawano School District Board unanimously approved updates to the SCHS course description booklet Oct. 27 that include a Menominee language offering titled Omāēqnomenēweqnaesen.
Matthew Raduechel, Ed.D, presented the proposed changes and described the Menominee language course as place-based, experiential, and rooted in storytelling to connect students with culture and sense of place. The executive summary states the course and instructor are grant-funded, and that no additional district financial impact is expected for the 2026–27 school year.
Board Member Bobbi Lemerond moved to approve the course-booklet additions; John Arens seconded. The motion carried 5-0.
Why it matters: the addition expands cultural and language offerings at the high school and is presented as supported by external grant funding. Administration noted that broader course additions are on hold pending a comprehensive review of scheduling and current offerings, but that the Menominee language pilot will proceed because of grant support.
The packet says department chairs will evaluate and consolidate offerings as needed to support scheduling and staffing for the coming school year.
