Representatives of the Reinbeck Fire Department told the Reinbeck City Council on March 2 that they will seek a $4 million bond in November to fund construction of a new fire station and asked to be placed on next month’s agenda to present details and justification. Mayor Jamie Eiffler opened the meeting at 5:30 p.m., and the request was recorded during the public-comment portion of the session.
Councilmembers did not act on the bond request at the March meeting; members instead agreed to place the department on the agenda in April so firefighters can present specific plans, estimated costs and a proposed ballot measure. The department’s representatives did not provide specifics about tax impacts, potential bond term or a timeline for construction during the March remarks.
The request follows prior capital planning conversations recorded at the meeting, including council discussion later about pursuing a capital improvement levy to raise approximately $50,000 annually if approved by voters. The fire department’s formal presentation next month is expected to include the department’s rationale for a new facility, preliminary cost estimates, and any recommended financing approach. The council will determine whether to formally place the bond on the November ballot after receiving that presentation.
No formal vote or resolution was taken March 2. The next council meeting will determine the department’s formal request and any paths for public hearings or ballot placement.
