Concord broadband work advances: Gifford Lane paving, provisioning upgrades and plan to bring fiber to housing authority

Director Jason updated the Light Board that local broadband construction and operational upgrades are underway and that the utility is finalizing agreements to extend fiber service to the Concord Housing Authority.

Why it matters: staff said this week work starts on Gifford Lane to tie existing broadband infrastructure into the larger network, with paving coordinated with the town's public works. Jason described the deployment of a new provisioning tool that will reconnect the customer-billing system (ERP) with the equipment-management system so customer-service staff can make account and provisioning changes without multiple handoffs.

The director said the utility is finalizing a service agreement with counsel to support bringing fiber to the Concord Housing Authority; once signed, the housing authority buildings will receive fiber, with the provider distributing service inside buildings using point-to-point wireless and other technologies. Jason noted the MLP will not be the retail vendor to end customers in that arrangement but that the work will generate additional revenue for the utility.

Staff also said they are phasing out one of four internet service providers to reduce to three; the change follows a recent need for faster speeds and is expected to lower costs while maintaining redundancy. The team is working with customers using statically assigned IP addresses to transition them into an independently leased block to avoid future administrative issues.

The board had no substantive objections and asked staff to continue coordination with public works and counsel; no formal vote was taken on procurements or service agreements at the meeting.
