Kennett approves 7-acre purchase for KBPW water treatment site; KBPW to launch residential bulk pickup

The Kennett City Council voted Feb. 3 to authorize the Kennett Board of Public Works (KBPW) to purchase a 7-acre property off Peanut Road to be used for a future water treatment plant.
KBPW CEO Chitester told the council the existing water treatment facility is "75 to 80 years old" and that staff are researching replacement options; the new site purchase begins the multi-year planning and construction process. The motion to approve the purchase was made by Council Member Mark Bryant and seconded by Council Member Bob Young and carried.
During council comments KBPW CEO Chitester also said KBPW will start a residential bulk pickup service the week of Feb. 16: pick ups will be every Friday, and residents must call KBPW to schedule by 3 p.m. Wednesday; the service is for residential properties only and will not cover landlord cleanouts or commercial properties. KBPW plans to notify residents via its website and social media.
The council did not set a construction timeline or budget for the water treatment project at this meeting; staff said further study and site work will be required before design and procurement.
