Calvert County commissioners voted to approve budget amendment BA2025-000238 to purchase a Kenworth day-cab tractor and a 48-foot open-top live-floor Mack trailer for the Solid Waste Division, moving $261,594 from equipment reserves into capital expenditures.
At a public hearing the county's Solid Waste representative (speaker 9) said the purchase is bid under existing contracts and will let the county haul recyclables directly to markets rather than pay an external processor. "Purchasing this equipment will allow increasing efficiency in time and fuel for hauling additional recyclables from Calvert County to various markets," the presenter said, adding it should reduce overtime and vehicle miles traveled.
Commissioner (speaker 10) moved to close the record and approve the amendment; the motion was seconded and carried with no discussion. Board members who spoke in favor framed the purchase as a cost-saving and operational-efficiency step given changes in recycling markets.
The amendment documents the transfer of $261,594 from equipment reserve account 40016 to capital account 50023 to cover the purchase. Staff said the reserve would still retain funds for future purchases after the transfer. The county did not provide a line-by-line lifecycle-cost projection at the hearing; staff told commissioners the purchase was bid and would reduce trips equivalent to several existing truck runs per day.
The vote was recorded as 'motion carries' in the meeting minutes. The board closed the hearing and adopted the resolution and budget amendment during the same session.
