Legislative liaison flags new state deadlines; board OKs paper third‑grade assessments

The district legislative liaison, Tara, briefed the board on several recently signed state bills and corresponding policy deadlines the district must meet.
Tara said Senate Bill 104, which addresses restroom facility requirements by gender, is signed and takes effect Feb. 25; the district’s facilities conform to the requirements discussed previously. House Bill 8 (the Parents' Bill of Rights) and a related release-time provision will require public policies (the Parents' Bill of Rights must be finalized by July 1; release-time rules by April 18). Tara also flagged House Bill 214 on staff political/religious neutrality, with a district policy due Jan. 25; the district’s attorneys will provide required language for these policies.
Separately, the board approved a resolution to administer Ohio-required third-grade reading assessments in paper-and-pencil format next school year. Members discussed potential costs and the stress these exams impose on young students; one board member said the paper format reduces technological frustration and teacher feedback indicated alignment with this approach.
"We have all the facilities and all the compliances set up that we visited and discussed last spring," Tara said of the restroom/facilities legislation. The board approved the 3rd-grade testing resolution by roll call.
