Huron commission authorizes police to apply for Byrne grant to buy cameras and radios

The Huron City Commission voted to allow the Huron Police Department to apply for Byrne Discretionary Community Project grant funding to buy portable and mobile radios and body-worn and vehicle cameras.
Police Chief Lair told the commission the department’s radios typically last eight to 10 years and that the grant would fund camera equipment and radio replacement. "Between the two, the full amount we put in for is probably around 750,000, give or take," Chief Lair said, describing the figure as a rough estimate to cover equipment over a 10-year period.
Chief Lair said the grant window opened July 1 and closes July 15; award notifications are expected to begin in August and could occur anytime later in the year. He said the grant has a zero-match option but the program may also fund portions of a request.
Commissioners moved and seconded the request and approved it by roll call.
The city will proceed with preparing an application while staff continue to monitor other federal and state funding opportunities for public-safety equipment.
