Chagrin Falls cemetery commission praises Memorial Day, tightens flag-disposal practice

The Village of Chagrin Falls Cemetery Commission met June 10, 2026, and reviewed recent maintenance and ceremonial matters, including praise for the Memorial Day program, a timeline for stream restoration and new direction on flag disposal. Susan H. White, chair of the commission, called the meeting to order at 9:01 a.m. and signed the minutes at adjournment at 9:45 a.m.

Commission members reported the Memorial Day ceremony “went even better than ever,” with improved sound and successful distribution of programs. The commission noted one equipment problem: brass flag stands provided by outside parties were too flimsy to hold flags in the breeze, while the commission’s own flag holder had capacity for all flags.

Administration told the commission that problems with the cemetery stream are ongoing but that restoration work is expected to begin within the next two weeks. Commissioners asked staff to track restoration timing and progress.

The commission documented multiple landscaping complaints tied to contractor performance, including shifting stones, inconsistent weed whipping and failure to remove downed branches as required by contract. Administration is keeping records of complaints for further discussion and potential enforcement.

On flag handling and disposal, the commission confirmed that future public flag-burning ceremonies will use cotton flags only. The commission also stated it can no longer bury shredded nylon flags in the cemetery; instead, staff have located a national agency that will accept shredded nylon flags for proper disposal.
