Martha Aguilar was sworn in as a police officer for the town of Brentwood during a brief ceremony at a town meeting, where officials described her as the municipality’s first Latina officer.
Moderator (speaker 2) introduced Aguilar and reviewed her history with the town, saying, "It's a proud moment for the town of Brentwood to see 1 of our own becoming a new police officer" and noting she would be the town's "1st Latina officer in the town of Brentwood." The Moderator said Aguilar began working with the town six years ago through the Prince George's County summer youth enrichment program and was hired as a court enforcement officer in August 2019.
Aguilar repeated the oath of office administered by the Moderator, saying, "I, Martha Aguilar, do solemnly swear... To the best of my skill and judgment Diligently and faithfully Without partiality or prejudice Execute the office of police officer for the town of Brentwood." The oath included pledges to support the Constitution of the United States and the laws of the State of Maryland.
In brief remarks following the oath, Aguilar thanked family and colleagues and described the personal challenge of attending the police academy. She said, "Deciding to go to the academy was not an easy decision at all... I've always been a very involved parent... So to make that decision was very hard." She told the Moderator, "Mayor, thank you for giving me the opportunity always to, provide me trainings, and I graduated."
Town officials paused the meeting to celebrate Aguilar’s swearing-in and said the council would resume its regular meeting at 7:00 PM.
Aguilar’s swearing-in was presented as a personnel appointment rather than a contested action; no vote or motion was recorded in the transcript.
