Nicole Banks, the city’s director of parks and recreation, told the council the department operates through three divisions — parks, recreation and the Monterey Sports Center — and supports everything from maintenance of athletic fields, trails and the urban forest to camps, older-adult programs and lifeguard training. She said the sports center is open nearly 100 hours per week and serves more than 8,000 members.
Banks thanked staff, volunteers and nonprofit partners and asked the council to adopt the recognition resolution. Mayor Williamson and council members offered personal remarks about local parks and thanked the department for its role in recent community events, including the city’s July 4 celebration.
Several residents and commissioners also spoke during the item’s public comment period, calling out individual employees by name at the sports center and recognizing work at Laguna Grande Park. Kathy Boya, who identified herself as serving on a parks commission, expressed gratitude for the department’s cohesion and programming.
The council approved the resolution and invited the parks and recreation team to a photograph at the meeting’s end.
