Officials report struck gas line in Strathmore; no major evacuations required

Village public-safety officials reported to the council on July 7 that an excavator struck a residential, low-pressure natural-gas line in the Strathmore neighborhood earlier in the week.
The fire chief said crews stayed on scene with Enbridge until the company shut off the line. "We didn't have that situation" of a major underground rupture that would require evacuation, the chief said, adding that the gas in this case dissipated into the air and did not enter basements or ignite.
The engineer said most underground work in Strathmore is complete and that pavement crews are expected to begin pulling pavement on Thursday with work continuing into Friday; about half of one road was expected to be pulled up before the weekend. Notices were distributed to residents and the mayor's office circulated updates.
Officials said the Strathmore strike differed from a recent Twinsburg incident where an underground line ignition occurred; here, crews reported the line hit was a lower-pressure residential line and conditions did not lead to an ignition or large-scale evacuation.
Council members were told the contractor and utility companies have been notified and that communications to residents and adjustments to bus routes will be coordinated as needed.
