Stanhope council approves routine business, schedules community events and confirms clerk training
Summary
At its Sept. 10 meeting the Stanhope City Council approved the consent agenda, made committee and mayor pro tem appointments, approved clerk training and scheduled Halloween and a flu-shot clinic; council also agreed to continue sewer-system mapping and discussed public-works equipment needs.
The Stanhope City Council met Sept. 10 at the Stanhope Community Building and approved routine business, set community-event dates and confirmed additional clerk training.
Mayor Kelly Wirtz presided. Jill Haman moved to approve the consent agenda — including the Sept. 10 agenda, Aug. 13 minutes, payment of claims and financial reports for Aug. 1–31, 2024 — and Mindy Hetland seconded. The council approved the consent agenda by a 5–0 roll call.
Council approved several personnel and committee items: Haman moved and Hetland seconded the appointment of Council Member Doug Sogard as mayor pro tem; that motion carried. Haman also moved to assign Mindy Hetland to the Public Safety committee and Kempton Young to General Public Safety; the council approved those committee changes.
The council authorized an additional 24 hours of clerk training for Lynda Wunder (from Duncombe), following a motion by Doug Sogard that Hetland seconded. The council also approved Halloween trick-or-treat hours on Oct. 31 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and allowed Envision Stanhope to host a trunk-or-treat in the parking lot across from City Hall. A community influenza clinic was announced for Oct. 16 from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the Stanhope Community Center; residents were asked to bring insurance or Medicare cards.
On administrative matters, the council decided not to revert to monthly payroll and will retain twice-monthly payroll to avoid hardship for some employees; the minutes do not record a formal roll call for that decision.
The meeting included a petitions-and-communications segment in which a town resident raised concern about a registered sex offender living in Stanhope and a resident at 400 Grace Street reported an unusually high water bill. Council members explained that the recent billing anomaly resulted from a meter-reading interval that was five days longer than usual and said meter readings will be standardized to occur on the 16th of each month.
The meeting adjourned at 7:16 p.m.
