Schools report summer program enrollments, free meals and SOL perfect scores; board honors students and staff

Administrators told the board the summer learning program (June 1'30) provides free transportation and meals, partners with the YMCA for Power Scholars, and currently enrolls about 140 K'5 and 130 grades 6'8 students; the board also recognized May students and staff, and several students who scored perfect 600s on SOLs.
Greensville County School officials told the school board June 8 that the division's summer learning program began June 1 and runs through June 30, offering free transportation and breakfast and lunch to participating students.
Vice chair Pearson presented the program update and said the division is partnering with the YMCA to provide Power Scholars for K'8 students, offering reading and math support plus English-learner services. He reported current enrollments of approximately 140 kindergarten-through-fifth-grade students and about 130 students in grades 6 through 8. The high-school summer offerings include program times shown on the division screen and "project graduation" options for seniors needing course or SOL requirements; Pearson said about seven students could graduate this summer if they complete requirements.
The board also recognized May Students and Staff of the Month from Greensville Elementary, Wyatt Middle School, Greensville County High School and division staff. Presenters read certificate language to honorees and named students by grade, and they listed staff recipients including Jennifer Walton (staff of the month at the elementary school, a second-time honoree), Alfred Mayfield, Sharon Webb and Jaden Gary. A presenter also named several students who earned perfect SOL assessment scores (a score of 600) across grades and subjects.
The board did not debate the summer program numbers at length; staff contacts for program questions were listed at the meeting (mister Riddick for Greensville Elementary, doctor Chapman for Wyatt, doctor Faguaro for GCHS and mister Loach for Power Scholars), and the superintendent said the division will provide more complete information at the July meeting.
