Shrewsbury board reviews park maintenance, playground and pavilion proposals

During the Oct. 15 Parks Board meeting, members reviewed routine committee reports and new ideas for park improvements across the town.
Committee reports identified specific maintenance tasks: at Wehner Park the small playground needs weeding and possibly additional mulch and vines by the creek at the bottom of the upper field require attention; Amy George reported no significant issues at Brinkop Park; Christine McDermott and Glenn Kramer reported no updates at Hartree Park; Chris Buck proposed considering removal of the swing set across from the pool at Ackfeld Park and noted a large tree will be removed and that tennis-court repairs will be handled in a longer-term master plan.
In new business, the board discussed ideas ranging from extending and repairing the Wehner walking path to adding seating near the condos, installing stairs from the upper parking lot to the new tennis courts, building a pavilion and replacing the bathroom at Brinkop, implementing a tree-management plan, and replacing the portable bathroom at Wehner with a permanent restroom and a new playground.
Kathy Rehmer reported lower participation in the Beautification Crew this year and suggested switching from an app to text messaging to improve turnout; Chris Buck proposed scheduling a spring event with hamburgers to recruit volunteers. The minutes also noted that creek areas appear overgrown and that focused attention is needed.
