Edmonston council receives clean audit, discusses sidewalk parking and police recruitment

Mayor Tracy R. Gant called the Town of Edmonston council to order at 7:05 p.m. on Jan. 7, 2024, for a virtual regular meeting. A representative of Lindsey & Associates presented the FY23-24 annual audit and reported that the town received a clean audit.

Council Member Betsy McCauley moved to accept the Nov. 5 work session and Nov. 13 regular meeting minutes as presented; Council Member John Johnson seconded. The motion carried with ayes from McCauley, Kony Serrano and Johnson and no nays.

Police Chief Beale presented the department's November reports, listing the homicide report, overall crime report, parking report and traffic report for November. During council dialogue, Council Member Kony Serrano asked whether the department coordinates with the police academy to recruit officers; Chief Beale said he is working with two potential candidates who will attend the academy this spring.

Town Administrator Rod Barnes reported a resident concern about vehicles parking on sidewalks during snow events, which prevents sidewalks from being cleared. Barnes said the code officer issues friendly reminders to residents; the town discussed the possibility of a text blast to remind people how to move vehicles. Barnes also reminded the council that the Maryland Municipal League legislative reception will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 8 in Annapolis.

Council Member McCauley moved to adjourn at 7:45 p.m.; Council Member John Johnson seconded and the motion carried with ayes from McCauley, Johnson and Serrano. No public comments were recorded during the public comment period.
