Elkton historic commission approves barber pole and exterior touch-ups at 105 North Street

The Town of Elkton Historic District Commission on May 28 approved limited exterior changes at 105 North Street, allowing a black-painted storefront door, touch-up work on the pillars and front concrete step, and the installation of a classic 27-inch barber pole on the building’s exterior wall.
Dorzaser Goldman, the applicant, attended the meeting with property owner Alex Szep to present the request. Szep told the Commission they plan to restore the vacant building and operate a barber shop on the first floor with two apartments above; he said separate applications will be submitted for full window replacement, a new roof, brick repointing and replacement of the wood trim with aluminum-clad material.
Jeanne D. Minner, the Town’s Director of Planning, asked whether window mullions would be painted; Szep said the mullions are currently aluminum and they likely will leave them as is. Minner also said that the size of signs in the windows must be approved by Chip Bromwell, the Town’s Zoning Administrator, and the Commission requested that the applicants return with sign renderings showing dimensions and placement for any window signage.
Brandon Boas moved to approve painting the door black, touching up the pillars, hanging a classic 27-inch barber pole, and placing a sign on the door glass; Christine A. Brimm Hurschman seconded the motion, and the Commission approved it unanimously.
The approval covers only the first-floor storefront items described; the applicants must file separate applications for the additional work Szep outlined, and the Commission indicated it will review sign dimensions and any material changes to the windows in later submissions.
