Elkton commission unanimously approves chain-link fence at 233 W. Main

The Town of Elkton Historic District Commission on June 25 unanimously approved Rosemarie Murphy’s request to install a 4-foot-tall, 32-foot-long chain-link fence along the property line at 233 W. Main Street.
Murphy, the applicant and resident of 233 W. Main Street, told the Commission that she lives in and owns both sides of the duplex and sought the fence because neighboring tenants were trespassing and defacing her property. “I live at 233 W. Main St and it’s a duplex house that I own both sides of,” she said during the meeting.
Commission members discussed the Historic District’s role in reviewing exterior work. Chair Paula Newton clarified that the exact placement of the fence and any required setbacks would be determined by the Town’s Zoning rules, and not by the Commission. Jeanne D. Minner, Director of Planning, asked why the applicant was requesting the fence; Murphy reiterated her concerns about trespass and property damage and said she had sought police assistance.
A motion by Commissioner Mickey Thompson, seconded by Commissioner Christine A. Brimm Hurschman, to approve the application passed unanimously. The approval grants the Commission’s consent for the fence design; final compliance with siting and setback requirements remains subject to the Zoning Administrator’s review and any applicable Town ordinances.
The Commission recorded the approval as a formal action. The meeting proceeded to consider additional storefront signage and exterior renovation requests.
