Liz Barnes, program coordinator for the Danvers Council on Aging, told the board May 21 that two new classes will begin in June: Active Aging with Andrea Bean (two days per week, 9:00 a.m.) and Strength & Balance with Dot McKeen, which starts Tuesday mornings on June 23.
Barnes also said Patio Parties will move to daytime this year to increase accessibility. The parties are scheduled once a month from June through September on the third Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Food pricing will change: hot dogs or burgers will be $3, salad or watermelon $1. Mitchell said ice cream will be sponsored by FDCOA for three events and by Danvers Rotary for one event.
Board member Maureen Larivee asked whether the congregate (donation) meal would still be offered on Patio Party days; Mitchell said the congregate meal will continue and staff will poll regular congregate diners to identify who prefers the congregate meal versus attending the Patio Party, which is a paid meal option.
Barnes also noted two instructor hires: Andrea Bean, who previously taught at the YMCA, and Dot McKeen, a returning instructor for Strength & Balance.
Bistro operations and staffing were discussed as part of program operations: the Bistro has operated 81 days in FY26 (compared with 24 days in FY25) and is roughly breaking even; Nutrition Coordinator Jen will increase hours effective July 1 and a part-time assistant is being considered. The Activity Assistant vacancy has attracted applicants and interviews were held.
