Pickleball group seeks courts grant; council declines volleyball site and hears safety concerns

At the Sept. 8 Buffalo City Common Council meeting, residents raised park and recreation concerns and presented plans for a new pickleball facility.
Gena Kriesel, recently elected president of the River Valley Pickleball group, told the council the group is working on nonprofit registration and grant applications, submitted letters of community support and presented three bids for construction of new courts. The council discussed possible locations and said the volleyball area would not be a suitable site; councilors agreed to revisit location decisions once funding and nonprofit status are confirmed.
Resident Greg Jencen asked that the city address a safety hazard at the intersection of 19th and Schiller, citing vehicles and other obstructions in the right‑of‑way. Councilmember George Fuller also asked Superintendent Eric Mann to remove a tree by the playground that has been dropping limbs.
The council noted the park bathroom repairs — funded in part with the city’s final ARPA allocation — are complete and bathrooms are open. Kim Beseler asked about a dog‑leash sign in the park and requested the leash ordinance be reviewed at a future meeting.
