The Town Board of the Town of Mamaroneck on March 4 approved an increase to EV-charging rates and authorized an idling fee for town-owned charging stations, aimed at discouraging drivers from leaving vehicles in charging spots after charging completes.
Meredith, who described the recommendations from the town engineer’s office, said the changes respond to frequent complaints that vehicles occupy charging stalls after a full charge, preventing other EV drivers from using the stations. "There's been a lot of conversation about the EV chargers... some of the issues regarding folks who come and charge may charge their vehicle for a while and then use the spot as a parking spot," she said.
The board discussed location-specific rules: the Town Center chargers and those at the Hammocks Rink will remain subject to a no-overnight-parking rule, while other town-owned chargers may allow overnight charging between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. Meredith said the town engineer’s office compared local charge fees across the county and recommended the rate increases to bring the town in line with comparable communities.
A board member moved to approve the proposed rate increases and to implement an idling fee as presented; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote with no recorded dissent. The board did not specify the new per-kilowatt-hour rate in the discussion transcript; the engineering memo was referenced as the source for the recommended amounts.
The change takes effect once town staff publish the new rates and update signage at affected charging stations. The board did not set a formal timeline in the meeting minutes but authorized staff to implement the fee structure.
