Police Chief Brandon Leschke reported to the Common Council on July 15 that his department issued 42 traffic citations, 15 written traffic warnings and five municipal ordinance citations in the most recent reporting period.
Chief Leschke told the council that Officer Keberlein assisted Waupaca Police Department on a reported weapons disturbance involving shots fired, and that Officer Vue observed and reported a wrong-way driver on Highway 10. Leschke also said Officer Vue is investigating a sex-offense case on E. Sumner Street. The chief reported that items from a CN Railroad grant have been received and that he is interviewing candidates for a part-time position.
During citizen appearances, Frank Zaboj, the library representative, said the library addition is nearly complete and asked whether the council objected to removing a large front-tree; the board will handle landscaping and seek council input. Terrie Tews Liebe, Chamber president, previewed Horse and Buggy Days (Sept. 13–14), listed associated events and vendors, said the Chamber is updating its website and logo, and asked the council to consider a city donation (to be placed on next month’s agenda). Chris Martinson spoke on behalf of Duane Wilson, a candidate for Assembly District 57, and urged residents to vote in the Aug. 13 primary.
The council discussed an offer to purchase a lot in Industrial Park West described by the clerk as substantially lower than prior sales prices for similar lots. Council members directed that the prospective buyer be invited to meet with the council in closed session on Aug. 19 to discuss the offer; no sale was finalized at the July 15 meeting.
Later in the meeting the council voted to move into closed session at 7:03 p.m. under Wis. Stat. 19.85(1)(c) to consider employment, promotion, compensation or performance-evaluation data regarding the City Administrator position; the motion (Gunderson, second Gorchals) carried with six ayes and zero nays. The meeting adjourned at 7:16 p.m.
Why it matters: the police updates describe active investigations and traffic-enforcement levels that affect public safety; the closed-session motions and Industrial Park discussion signal council-level personnel and property decisions that will return on the Aug. 19 agenda.
