Franklin Borough board accepts teacher resignation, approves new elementary hire

The Franklin Borough School District board on Oct. 29 accepted the resignation of Karen LoPorto, a full-time middle school teacher, and approved hiring Polina Acurol as an elementary education teacher for the 2025–26 school year.
On a motion by board member Wayne Bartron, seconded by board member Christopher Patterson, the board approved a resolution accepting LoPorto’s resignation, with a last day of Dec. 12, 2025. The board then approved a second resolution appointing Polina Acurol (1.0 full-time equivalent) to begin on or about Jan. 5, 2026.
The appointment specifies a BA, Step 8 salary of $64,637 per year, to be prorated based on start date; Acurol will be benefit eligible and the hire is contingent on the district’s receipt of required paperwork. Both personnel items were presented as part of the Personnel Committee report by Chair Stephanie Perna and carried by roll call vote, recorded in the minutes as unanimous.
The meeting packet and minutes note that the board opened two periods for public comment (on agenda and non-agenda items) and read Policy 0167 governing public presentations; no members of the public spoke. The meeting, called to order by the Board President, convened at 7:07 p.m. at Franklin Elementary School and adjourned at 7:14 p.m. The minutes are signed by Business Administrator/Board Secretary Carlos Sarmiento.
