Town staff updated commissioners on the status and operating costs of the town’s public electric vehicle chargers during the March 3 meeting.
The town has four chargers (two stations) that were grant-funded in 2018 and included five years of maintenance and repair service that expired in 2023. Staff said they are investigating whether the units can accept credit-card payment; the manufacturer is being consulted to determine whether an upgrade is required and whether grant funding would be available to cover it.
From July 2023 to early 2025 usage increased; town figures presented at the meeting showed monthly costs for the EV stations roughly between $354 and $583. Town Manager said that, as of March 1, the chargers have been added to the town’s solar net‑metering account with Potomac Edison and that linking the chargers to solar should “drop, dramatically” the town’s billed cost once the account shows a month or two of data.
Staff proposed returning to the board with an update in about three months after net‑metering data are available and before any decision on upgrades or card-payment installation.
