Anacostia Trails rep briefs Brentwood on heritage grants, trolley‑trail and 2026 PGC250 planning
Summary
Anacostia Trails Heritage Area executive director Meg Baco told Brentwood council the nonprofit offers small 'rocket' grants (~$5,000) and helps applicants pursue Maryland Heritage Areas Authority grants (noncapital up to $50,000; capital up to $100,000); Baco asked the town to appoint a municipal rep and offered to share role details and convene meetings once SHA releases a trolley‑trail feasibility study.

Meg Baco, executive director of the Anacostia Trails Heritage Area, told Brentwood’s council on Dec. 2 that the nonprofit supports cultural‑tourism projects across Prince George’s County and can help towns secure small and larger state heritage grants.
Baco described ATHA as a countywide 501(c)(3) that assists municipalities on projects from murals and wayfinding to trail connectivity. She highlighted recent local involvement — including a ribbon‑cutting at Entrepreneurs Park in North Brentwood — and said ATHA offers small “rocket” grants of up to $5,000 for local, short‑term projects and helps prospective grantees apply for Maryland Heritage Areas Authority grants (noncapital awards the presentation described as up to $50,000 and capital awards up to $100,000).
Baco also described regional work on the Trolley Trail extension and said ATHA is seeking SHA’s feasibility study results; once those are available she offered to help convene a meeting about the project. She invited Brentwood to designate a municipal advisory committee representative to join ATHA’s advisory board and said she would provide a short paragraph describing the expectations of that role for the council’s newsletter and outreach.
Council members asked about meeting schedules, how town events might connect to the America 250/PGC250 commemoration and whether Brentwood should plan independent events; Baco said PGC250 planning will include hybrid meetings, genealogical programming and a keystone block‑party event in Bowie on May 30, 2026, and encouraged municipalities to adopt state/national ideas where helpful.
Council thanked ATHA and asked staff to circulate the role description and any materials for municipal representatives ahead of the next advisory meetings.
