Council approves $3,554 in seed containers; committee reassignment for Councilwoman Downing fails

At the Oct. 16 meeting the council approved the purchase of two seed containers for Public Works after a motion from Council Liaison Rakesha Barnhart. Barnhart moved for the purchases and the motion was seconded; the council recorded the affirmative voice vote and the mayor declared the motion carried. The two purchases cited in the motion were $1,980 and $1,574 for a combined total of $3,554.
Later in the meeting council members completed internal ballots on two matters: filling the town’s vacant council seat and reassigning Councilwoman Downing from the Public Safety Committee to the Senior Committee. The council recorded that the candidate for the vacant seat received council votes and that the swearing-in will occur at the next month’s meeting.
The separate motion to reassign Councilwoman Downing was put to a vote and failed; the meeting record shows four "no" votes and one "yes." The mayor announced that Downing would remain on Public Safety until such time as a member shift is requested or the new council member is seated.
