Laguna Beach committee votes to recommend earthquake‑resilience ad hoc to city council

The Laguna Beach Emergency Disaster Preparedness Committee voted July 6 to forward a draft resolution recommending the formation of an earthquake‑resilience ad hoc to city council.
Committee members said the ad hoc would mirror the wildfire ad hoc by convening stakeholders—including city staff, utilities, land managers and other agencies—to identify gaps in preparedness, mitigation and recovery for seismic risk. "The concept is to basically duplicate the wildfire ad hoc," one member said, and the committee discussed including representatives from SoCal Edison, gas utilities, water districts and emergency responders.
Members cautioned against duplicating existing critical‑infrastructure studies and FEMA lifeline work and asked staff to coordinate to avoid overlap. The motion to forward the resolution was moved, seconded and approved by those present; the chair said the resolution will be given to the council liaison for possible placement on the August city‑council agenda.
The committee did not set timelines or funding as part of the July action; the vote transmits a recommendation to city council for consideration.
