Green Township environmental committee advances second pollinator garden, signs up for Clean Communities Day

The Green Township Environmental Advisory Committee met on May 6, 2025, and advanced plans for a second pollinator garden while approving volunteer participation in Clean Communities Day.
At the municipal building meeting, Fausto Moyano distributed design photos showing the proposed layout for a second pollinator garden and a bench placement area. Elly Lessin, a committee member, recommended using native shrubs rather than trees around the bench. Matthew Fox agreed to contact Jason Miller to determine when clearing for the new garden can begin and to coordinate that timing with purchases of native plants. The minutes note that the bench has not yet been installed and that Cynthia Moyano was asked to provide a list of native plant species from the first pollinator garden to use at the committee's outreach table.
Committee members also discussed participation in Green Township Day on June 7, 2025. Lessin suggested booking a raptor presentation by a local educator (referred to in the minutes as the “bird lady”); she said she will reach out to the presenter to determine requirements and cost. Matthew Fox requested current budget figures from the secretary to confirm available funds for the event. Members listed items to bring to the outreach table, including tablecloths, books on native plants, informational pamphlets, posters and paperweights, and agreed to locate materials used in prior years for reuse.
The committee voted unanimously to participate in Clean Communities Day on May 17, 2025. Christopher Sullivan moved to participate; Fausto Moyano seconded the motion and the vote was recorded as unanimous. Matthew Fox completed the participation form indicating three committee members would attend; Secretary Gwen Santos will forward the form to the Clean Communities Coordinator.
The committee reviewed an information packet from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection reporting a heating-oil spill in Green Township; members posed no questions. Minutes from the Sussex County Agriculture Development Board (March 17, 2025) were provided for informational purposes; Matthew Fox said he found no items in those minutes that related to Green Township.
The committee tabled discussion of the pollinator garden contest until its next meeting. Before adjourning, members discussed possibly holding an additional planning meeting by Zoom to finalize Green Township Day logistics but made no final determination. Christopher Sullivan moved to adjourn at 6:35 p.m.; Fausto Moyano seconded, and the motion carried. The committee's next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.
