Environmental committee refines pollinator-garden plan, hears offer of donated plants and a deer‑barrier model

The Green Township Environmental Advisory Committee met April 1, 2025, at the Municipal Building and approved the minutes of its March 4 meeting by unanimous vote. Committee members spent the bulk of the meeting refining plans for a second pollinator garden and a garden bench and heard about a deer‑barrier system and interpretive signage used at a nearby reservoir.
Matthew Fox, committee member, moved to approve the March 4 minutes; Fausto Moyano, committee member, seconded the motion, and the committee voted unanimously to approve them. The committee later adjourned at 6:35 p.m.; the adjournment motion was made by Matthew Fox and seconded by Christopher Sullivan, committee member.
On the garden project, Matthew Fox and Fausto Moyano reported they visited the existing garden sites and marked plants to be retained when the township Department of Public Works (DPW) prepares the area for the second garden and bench. Fausto Moyano presented an initial site plan that showed the proposed bench, tree locations, gardens and mulch. The committee asked Fausto to prepare a clearer, dimensioned diagram to present to DPW Supervisor Jason Miller to ensure the installation and plant protection are coordinated with DPW work.
Committee members said clearing a number of fallen trees will be necessary before the bench can be installed. Fox urged the group to explore ways to prevent future tree damage and to identify funding for tree removal; options mentioned included controlled burns and grant funding, though no specific grants or timelines were identified.
Christopher Sullivan said he had spoken with the proprietor of Plainview Growers, who indicated Plainview would donate plants for the garden but did not want public attribution or advertising. Cynthia Moyano suggested asking whether Plainview would consider donating trees rather than container plants; Sullivan said he would follow up.
Ellen Lessin, committee member, confirmed that members had reviewed an online presentation by Doug Tallamy on planting native gardens that had been shared at a prior meeting and said the presentation was informative. Lessin also described the Plot Saver Deer Barrier System being used by designer John Park at Merrill Creek Reservoir and showed an online example of interpretive signage; she said Park offered to share his files and signage templates with the committee.
Members briefly discussed Green Township Day, scheduled for June 7, 2025, and agreed to bring presentation ideas to the May 6 meeting. The committee set no final deadlines at the April 1 meeting.
