Hamilton EAC plans cleanups, monarch initiatives and a rain‑barrel event

At its March 11 meeting, the Hamilton Township Environmental Commission’s Green Team reported plans for seasonal community events and habitat projects, and discussed outreach and merchandise for upcoming public activities.
Claudia Shaughnessy said the commission intends to apply for the ANJEC 2026 Environmental Commission Grant for Open Space Stewardship (application deadline April 13, 2026) to support projects such as bat houses and planting. Members noted Carrie Feuer will follow up with township administration about the grant application.
The first cleanup day is scheduled for March 21, 11 a.m.–1 p.m., starting at the library with follow‑up work at Wing Haven. The commission recorded plans to collect spring flower bulbs for planting, and that Monarch Dome materials have been ordered for installation at local meadows and gardens.
Jeanette Bergeron said the commission received a proclamation for the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge and will host a Monarch Butterfly library display in April. The minutes note that Wing Haven currently cannot install new signage or host a beehive due to liability concerns, but that installing mesh around the monarch dome is acceptable.
Clinton Griggs announced a rain‑barrel event on May 2, 2026: the commission has identified 30 barrels provided at no cost by River Horse Brewing and Butler Engineering. A larger community cleanup is set for April 11 with household hazardous waste (HHW) supported at Shady Brook Park; Jim Wyrough (Hamilton Public Works/OEM) is coordinating lunch and materials.
Madison Nebbia said the commission chose Swedish dish cloths for event giveaways after finding plantable pencils too costly; staff will work with Public Works and Clean Communities on ordering. The commission also recorded plans for Arbor Day on April 24, which the mayor will kick off and which will include planting opportunities tied to the township’s 250th‑anniversary activities.
Several outreach items and future presentations were scheduled, including a Mercer County Mosquito Commission meeting and a Girl Scouts project presentation in May.
