Recorder warns of proposed recording-fee surcharge; large indexing backlog remains

She said the office used a vendor (Condor) for indexing work and that the vendor processed 9,228 documents in May and about 69,835 documents to date under the current contract.
On legislation affecting the recorder's office, Karen described a bill under consideration that, as presented to the association, would add $150 to recording fees for mortgages or related documents that reference a nominee (for example, documents listing a nominee service such as MERS); the proposal would direct $120 of that fee to a rural housing support program. Karen said the association opposed the bill, it was not called this session, and she expects it could be reintroduced in a future session.
She also described routine FOIA inquiries about records affecting specific properties and explained the office provides search instructions and access to public computers rather than performing searches for requesters.
