Huron Valley Schools recommends National Geographic LIFT and Impact for secondary multilingual learners

Huron Valley Schools’ English language development team recommended the district approve National Geographic’s LIFT (high school) and Impact (middle school) series to serve newcomer and beginner multilingual learners in grades 6–12.
Presenters described a multi‑phase review process: evaluating candidate resources in 2023–24, piloting two top choices (SAVA S/AILA ELL and National Geographic LIFT/Impact) during the 2024–25 school year, and debriefing with pilot teachers this spring. The ELD team said National Geographic’s materials best met district needs because they offer six progressive levels, integrate vocabulary, phonics (embedded in the middle-school series), speaking, reading and writing, include culturally responsive visuals and include online teacher supports and assessments.
One pilot teacher quoted in meeting materials described strong student engagement and real-world connections produced by the materials. The ELD team said the district will phase implementation in August with initial training and follow-up professional development in September and February.
Funding and next steps: The team proposed using federal Title III (bilingual/EL) grant funds (Section 4041) to pay for the purchase. The board heard the presentation and asked clarifying questions about levels and population size; presenters explained Huron Valley is a low‑incidence district for multilingual learners and prioritized starter-level resources for newcomers. The board indicated support and invited questions prior to a final purchase approval expected at a future meeting.
