Springfield SD 186 honors retiring superintendent Jennifer Gill after 12 years

In a prepared and emotional address she said she loved the job and the community and praised the district’s educators and support staff for their work. “I absolutely love this job and I love this community,” she said, describing the last 12 years as a privilege.
The board and guests highlighted recent student successes. Earlier in the meeting the superintendent’s report noted 811 graduates across the district’s three high schools this year and provided a post‑graduation breakdown: Lamphere reported 225 graduates with about 20% indicating plans for a four‑year college; Southeast reported 266 graduates with about 27% planning four‑year college; Springfield High reported 320 graduates and about 42% planning four‑year college. The superintendent also announced a July 30 back‑to‑school community event at Sheels/Shield Sports Park expected to serve about 3,000 people with free supplies and food provided in partnership with local organizations.
Board members presented several tokens of appreciation and formal remarks. Board member Micah Miller said the board had made a donation to the Springfield Public School Foundation in Gill’s name, and multiple members recounted specific examples of Gill’s leadership and contributions to programs, hiring and community partnerships. A custom watercolor canvas and commemorative coasters featuring district themes were presented.
Board chair (presiding officer) and other members reiterated confidence in the transition plan and introduced the incoming superintendent in brief remarks later in the meeting. The board followed the tribute with routine business items and a photo of the leadership team.
The meeting concluded with the board announcing its next regular session on July 6, 2026; no policy decision about the superintendent transition was taken at this session beyond tributes and introductions.
