Fort Myers Beach council readies implementation phase of strategic plan, prioritizes four goals

Consultants from the Florida Institute of Government and Collaborative Labs told the Fort Myers Beach Town Council on June 15 that the strategic plan has moved into its implementation phase and emphasized tracking progress with public dashboards.
Angela Crist of the Florida Institute of Government summarized phases 1 and 2 and described the community report and an upcoming full data report. Tina Fisher of Collaborative Labs said phase 3 focuses on implementation planning: establishing structure and meetings, defining success metrics, building information repositories and dashboards, and aligning action plans with the town's budget and staffing.
Fisher said council and staff narrowed the plan—s initial priorities to four goals for the coming six months: a1) robust, adaptable infrastructure systems; c1) transparent, responsive and inclusive communication and leadership; d1) economic growth through business development and year-round tourism; and e2) storm-surge mitigation. She told the council those goals would serve as pilots for dashboard measures and that staff would refine action items and the frequency of reporting.
Council members welcomed the approach and repeatedly stressed that the plan must be a living, accountable document rather than one that "sits on a shelf." Several council members said they wanted measurable metrics and quarterly reporting so the public can follow progress; Councilor Rebecca Link and others said they support funding data systems to make measurement efficient. Town staff said implementation planning would begin in July and that the town has software already in place to host the dashboard.
The presentation closed with the consultants— offer to work with town leadership on success metrics and a schedule for reporting back to council. Council and staff said they will move into implementation planning immediately and bring refined action items and reporting intervals to future meetings.
