Board unanimously approves MOUs, accepts $75,000 donation and federal special‑education funds; food budget passes

At its June 16 meeting the Washington County Board of Education unanimously approved a slate of labor agreements, grants and budgets.
Board members voted to approve memoranda of understanding with the Washington County Teachers Association covering assignment language for in‑person speech‑language pathologists and provisions for national board‑certified staff; they also approved agreements with the Washington County Association of Supervisors and Administrators and with Washington County Educational Support Personnel addressing salary scales, job descriptions and other contract items.
The board accepted an anonymous donation of $75,000 to support the Smithsburg High School auditorium renovation project. "An anonymous donation of that size is very admirable," the Chair said before the unanimous vote.
District staff presented the FY27 local application for federal funds (LAFF) that supports special education services. The presenter said the district saw an increase of 67 students receiving special education or related services and described a combined allotment motioned by a board member. The motion on the LAFF grant was approved unanimously.
The board also approved the Food and Nutrition Services FY27 operating budget. Director Dean Ambly said lunch participation had increased by about 300 meals per day and projected another 175‑meal increase next year; he described planned investments in equipment and an intentional spend‑down from fund balance for replacements. As part of the budget, the director asked for a 20¢ meal price increase for paid lunches, citing conservative projections and comparisons with neighboring counties; the board approved the budget by unanimous vote.
All consent and new business items referenced were approved by unanimous roll call votes recorded during the meeting.
