County seeks sealed bids for $2.24M Chehalis Western Trail preservation project

County Engineer Matt Hasman described the project as surface rehabilitation of portions of a roughly 10-mile stretch between Yelm Highway and the Woodard Bay trailhead. The work would remove the top asphalt layer and replace it with new asphalt; staff are developing a communication plan to alert trail users to project impacts.
Hasman gave an estimated total cost of $2,240,000 and said $1,940,000 of that is federally funded, with $300,000 to come from local refunding—"a $6 to 1 ratio," he said. Construction would likely start later this summer or more likely in early fall, he added.
The board asked staff to consider access for trail users during construction and thanked staff for constituent outreach; no formal bid authorization vote was recorded in the morning session, but staff requested permission to call for bids and will return with procurement documents as required.
Next steps: Public Works will finalize bid documents and the communication plan, and will return to the board with a call-for-bids authorization and timeline for construction.
