Library staff report Nexus Center shifts and rental policy; board to receive August update

Library staff briefed the Flagler County Board on June 16 about operational shifts to the Nexus Center and how those changes affect budgets and rental revenue assumptions.
Staff explained that functions and some technology previously housed at branch libraries have moved to the Nexus Center, producing an initial drop in certain operating lines at branch locations and increasing custodial and janitorial costs at the larger Nexus facility. Staff noted competition from nearby venues that have set lower fee schedules and said the county has allowed some local governments and nonprofits to use the Nexus at no charge under existing policy.
The library will return in August with a fuller report that Commissioner O’Brien will present. That August presentation will include rental revenue, a breakdown of the Nexus Center’s operating costs and proposals to revisit fee schedules or policies that allow government entities to use the space without cost. A staff member said they are tracking event activity and will provide six months of revenue and usage data at the August meeting.
No formal policy change was voted on at the workshop; the board signaled support for a return presentation and a review of how the Nexus Center’s usage compares to initial projections.
